VANHUT and the screaming woman

A family tale of passion for building, awareness of nature and sustainable living

The story of Vanhut, has just three key players; the Vanderstaay family, (Col, Mel, Wil, Kelsi & Alana), whom inhabit the Vanhuts; the Gippsland bush, an indigenous wonderland and one mysterious screaming woman.

We’ll never forget the first time we heard it. That blood curdling scream. What is it? Is that sound real? Am I dreaming?

Let us take you back a decade. To camping on our bush block, amongst a forest of ancient grass trees. A dream was born. Imagine a room; as beautifully lit as a tent, but robust, secure and with minimal impact on the land. A moveable room. You move it to suit the growing trees. Vanhut was born.

Our dream grew. Vanhut became a room of many uses. Play area, home office, garden room, bedroom, studio….you name it. The experience grew too. Watching the animals through the tinted walls, the stars, moon, and sun. It kept us in tune with nature’s rhythms and provided a relaxed, unbuttoned lifestyle.

This principles of Vanhut stayed the same. To keep it simple, sustainable, adaptable and affordable. To work with nature, not against it. To enjoy the best elements of the day… the sun in winter… the cooling breeze in summer. To share it with family, friends, and now to have new people experiencing them in their own environments, with their own uses.

And the scream you ask? That was from a screaming woman owl and our first encounter with her. She once produced three stunning chicks that perched above our Vanhut entrance until fully fledged.
